In the wake of Obama’s executive actions on immigration reform announced in 2014, many undocumented and illegal immigrants have been scrambling to immigration agencies to find out what the reform means for them and how they can secure their stay in the United States. Unfortunately, un-accredited immigration representatives and pseudo-attorneys have been coming out of the woodwork to exploit people seeking information and guidance.

If the immigration reform applies to you or a loved one, and you are currently seeking legal advice, please cautious. Beware of any agency or self-proclaimed attorney that offers to help you submit an application or request related to the reform initiatives. Also, look out for the common immigration scams detailed below.

QUESTIONS TO ASK ANY IMMIGRATION PROFESSIONAL BEFORE YOU ENTRUST THEM WITH YOUR OPPORTUNITY, FAMILY & HOPE

There are 20,000 immigration attorneys in the U.S. Unfortunately, less than half of these are true professionals passionately dedicated to their clients. There are thousands who will offer you inexpensive or discounted fees. But be careful! These discount attorneys will likely lose your case and then blame the government. You may save $1000-2000 to begin with but you will lose thousands of dollars down the line as you have to hire a real attorney to file appeals or fight your deportation! Protect yourself by asking them these questions:

Don’t be fooled by inexpensive fees. Your Opportunity, Family and Hope are too important to find an inexpensive, inexperienced and unprofessional advocate to represent you. Besides, you will ALWAYS end up paying more by hiring a cheap attorney or notario. There are nine possible parts to your case. If your lawyer isn’t excellent, then your case will likely last longer and therefore cost you more. Or, they simply won’t know how to help you with every possible part of your case and you will therefore eventually lose your case or have to hire a second attorney! The best lawyers, on the other hand, will take care of your case quickly but still be prepared to represent you in every part of your case.

Government finally protecting immigrants from notarios and immigration consultants

Good news from the Associated Press (please see below). It pains me to see how many of my clients have previously been victimized by notarios and immigration consultants. many of these clients come to me when it is Artie too late. Now they find themselves in removal proceedings because the wrong petition was filed, or a predecessor step was not taken or the timing was just incorrect. They may have thought they were saving a few hundred dollars by not going to an attorney they will now cost their family thousands of dollars and will likely be deported. It is just heartbreaking and maddening. I truly hope that our new Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris will make this a priority. I will start posting some of the stories from my clients, with their permission, on the website in the weeks and months to come.
